His brother Ezra is also listed in the same Kellys as a 'Brewer, Colley Gate'. I have found no other reference to this premises and cannot positively establish where it was located within the area. However, I have been informed that the premises could be what is known as the Gate or Colley Gate Inn. Can anyone help please?

As an aside, I am also trying to establish if the licensed premises referred to in both entries are the same? Ie. did Ezra brew it and Philip sell it? If this is not the case, where did Ezra brew beer?

My own feelings are sadly, the premises were demolished or put beyond use, as they appear to have vanished. However, it would be first class, if my synacal view of things is proved wrong.

Hi Bill I connect to Ezra Crampton, his address on the Census was Windmill Hill, so presumably the Pub was in Windmill Hill, the only one I remember when I lived up there in the 1960's was The Chop House, The Round of Beef was at the top of Colley Gate and the Old Two Gates Public House was along Two Gates road, but was what you could describe as being in the Windmill Hill area. Thanks to everyone that has posted information. It really is appreciated!

I have traced the family line through the usual sources and your enquiries corroborate all your my findings. I note a couple of issues which I will research further. Namely, the matter of Ezra's Windmill Hill connection. I had missed the premises were registered as a business address. Anticipating of course, it is the right Ezra CRAMPTON. The famiy splits at some time, with my own line moving to Dudley Wood Road and the other to the Green side. nevertheless, I know this house on Windmill Hill still stands proudly on top of the hill.

I have contacted Nigel at CradleyLinks and he in fact kindly suggested the Colley Gate Inn connection.
