Whilst researching some convicts I came across this table produced by a fellow called Chadwick. He was sent to Tasmania in the early 1840's to check on the conditions of the convicts. When he returned to England he published hte following table in parliament and prominent newspapers.
Chadwicks English Poor Law Report. Table of daily food intake.
Transported thief. 330 oz
Convicted thief in English prison. 239 oz
Suspected thief in English prison. 181 oz
Soldier in English Army. 168 oz
Able bodied pauper. 152 oz
Independent labourer. 122 oz
No wonder a lot of convicts advised family members to commit a a crime and come on over at the Crown's expense!
