For Peterd among others,
I managed to find time to go and bother the girls at the Wiltshire family history place today. Concentrated on trying to find out about my Great Grandad William Oakes.
Went through the 1881, 1891 and the 1901 censussses! (I found that Daller business peterd but no idea what it means). Great Grandad lived in a place called 'Gaston House' Cupernham Road Camberwell and his kids are listed, but two of them George (5) and Harry (3) were born in Salisbury Wiltshire! ! ! There was another lad, Edward 9 months old born in Winchester Hants ! ! ! Did he move his boot making business? There wasn't any sort of conscription at that time was there?
I got a surprise when I looked in the 1901 census, William Oakes was a 49 year old Son in Law to a Mrs Joesland? a widow of 68 years. at 50 Broughton Road Fulham (Sands End, wherever that is). Entry number 345
Anyone like to have a guess? Have I gone up a blind alley?
Cheers, Tony.
