Richard Samuel Hugill married Emma Croft 1882

Can anyone please help me track down the marriage details of:
Richard Samuel Hugill born 16 April 1855 Millbrook Devon and
Emma Croft born 12 Nov 1858 Southsea.
On the 1881 census they each appear as single. He is a seaman at Portsmouth, she is with her parents nearby in Portsea.
They had a child on 11 June 1883 (Emma Patience Croft Hugill) at Southsea (again in the Portsmouth area) and appear from the birth certificate to be married by then. On the 1911 census they are still together and said to be married for 29 years. All of this points to a marriage between 1881 and 1883.
I have tried the indexes to the civil marriages (St Caths House) and the index to parish registers at Portsmouth and not found them.
Does anyone have any ideas of where to look next? Perhaps they never had a formal marriage?
Any help would be welcome. Thanks. John
