Hello,

Can anyone here find anything about one Tryphine Ruffle? She's in the 1901 Census as living in Ewshott with her husband George and children. But I can't find anything else about her, and I'm a bit stumped on possible variations on her name.

In 1901 she's listed as being 45 and born in 1855.

(Seriously....Tryphine?!)

I found the family in the 1891 Census, under the spelling RUFFEE. Something to explore at least!

Saint Tryphine (also spelled Trifine, Triphine and Tréphine) is a semi-legendary Breton saint whose life is often considered to be the basis of the story of Bluebeard. In Brittany she is widely revered as a patron saint of sick children and those whose birth is overdue. The legend of Saint Tryphine probably derives from a historical individual who was the wife of the early Breton ruler Conomor.

Interestingly the most likely birth I spotted was for an unnamed female -- maybe she was a sickly baby or mother had problems and they were aware of this saint!

The places match up, and quite frankly with a name like this lady's I'm willing to take it as it is.

MG - that's the info I found on a google of the name too! It strikes me that St. Tryphine's a Breton saint; I don't think of Hampshire labourer families having much knowledge in that area, but then I don't know anything about her family, so who knows....
