The information on BCC for Jabez Downing is wrong:

he was NOT born Newcastle Under Lyme - he appears in the 1861 census with his mother Mary (remarried to Benjamin Whitehouse) and his brother Edward b abt 1851.
He consistently gives his birthplace in later census as Dudley, and I think in at least one case as Netherton. I cannot find his mother or him in 1841 or 1851, but the Newcastle Under Lyme one is there. Then in 1861 there are suddenly two Jabez Downings on the census - one in Rowley/ Dudley and the Newcastle Under Lyme one.

the notes include the 1861 reference with Jabez and Edward Downing. It also includes the reference from BMD for the marriage (1854) of Benjamin Whitehouse and Mary Downing who must have been a widow.

So what we should have is Mary 'unknown' married to 'unknown' Downing with children Jabez b abt 1847 Netherton (Jun 1847 Dudley 18 272), and Edward b abt 1851. And then Mary remarries Benjamin Whitehouse in 1854.

Other than this, which I am sure is correct, I can find no other reference to Jabez until he marries and appears in later censuses with his own family.

The image for this census clearly shows all are born Dudley, not Audley.
