Forgive me if I've asked before, but I"™ve met a brickwall here, folks - any help in getting further back (or forward) with the Blotts and Coopers would be greatly appreciated ! Mary Ann Blott b. 1842 was my great grandfather William Wood"™s first wife. My guess is that her father, carpenter William Patmore Blott b. about 1811 was from the traditional Blott landscape :-) of Northamptonshire / Bedfordshire, perhaps through canal boat connections, but I've found nothing to put him there. This is what I have :

Descendants of William Patmore Blott

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM PATMORE BLOTT was born Abt. 1811, not in Shropshire, and died Bef. 1861. He married HANNAH COOPER 25 Oct 1841 in Holy Trinity, Smethwick, Staffs, daughter of THOMAS SMITH and HARRIET UNKNOWN. She was born Abt. 1806 in Wellington, Shropshire.

Notes for WILLIAM PATMORE BLOTT:
Carpenter resident on Oldbury Road, Smethwick in 1841 census, not born in Staffordshire.

Notes for HANNAH COOPER:
Born Hannah Smith, later Cooper, widow. In the 1841 census Hannah Cooper was living with William Blott in Oldbury Road, Smethwick, and had two children, Hannah Cooper aged 5 and Thomas Cooper aged 4. The couple married in the same year. In the 1861 census several people are lodging with the widowed Hannah Blott at 148 Duke Street, West Bromwich, several with her maiden surname Cooper. Thomas Cooper appears to be her son:

Hannah Blott abt 1805 Tipton, Staffordshire, England Head West Bromwich Staffordshire
Thomas Buxton abt 1837 Willenhall, Staffordshire, England Visitor West Bromwich Staffordshire
George Thomas Cooper abt 1858 West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England Lodger West Bromwich Staffordshire
Henry Cooper abt 1860 West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England Lodger West Bromwich Staffordshire
Mar[i]ah Cooper abt 1836 N Lodger West Bromwich Staffordshire
Sarah Cooper abt 1839 Coventry, Warwickshire, England Lodger West Bromwich Staffordshire
Thomas Cooper abt 1838 West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England Lodger West Bromwich Staffordshire

In 1851 census, no William is present but Hannah is "married" and a char woman" living at 5 Duke Street:

Eliza Blott abt 1848 W Bromwich, Staffordshire, England Daughter West Bromwich Staffordshire
Hannah Blott abt 1806 Wellington, Shropshire, England Head West Bromwich Staffordshire
Hannah Blott abt 1836 W Bromwich, Staffordshire, England Wife West Bromwich Staffordshire
Mary Blott abt 1844 W Bromwich, Staffordshire, England Daughter West Bromwich Staffordshire
Thomas Blott abt 1841 W Bromwich, Staffordshire, England Son West Bromwich Staffordshire

Children of WILLIAM BLOTT and HANNAH COOPER are:
i. HANNAH BLOTT, b. Abt. 1836, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.
ii. THOMAS BLOTT, b. Abt. 1841, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.

Notes for THOMAS BLOTT:
Perhaps a witness at the wedding of William Wood and Matilda Wright as "Thomas Cooper"?

2. iii. MARY ANN BLOTT, b. 05 Feb 1842, The Nine Leasows, Smethwick, Staffordshire; d. Abt. 1863, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.
iv. FRANCES BLOTT, b. 1844, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.
v. ELIZA BLOTT, b. Abt. 1848, West Bromwich, Staffordshire; m. JAMES CATTON, 1869, Holy Trinity, Smethwick, Staffs; b. Abt. 1841, Wednesbury, Staffs.

Notes for ELIZA BLOTT:
In 1872 "boarder" living on her own in West Bromwich, aged 22, "screw maker". No later record of either spouse.

Generation No. 2

2. MARY ANN6 BLOTT (WILLIAM PATMORE1) was born 05 Feb 1842 in The Nine Leasows, Smethwick, Staffordshire, and died Abt. 1863 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire. She married WILLIAM WOOD 18 May 1863 in Christ Church, West Bromwich, Staffs, son of WILLIAM WOOD and ANN UNKNOWN. He was born Abt. 30 Sep 1832 in Alveley, Shropshire, and died 04 Feb 1898 in 14 Wesley Street, Oldbury, Worcestershire.

Notes for MARY ANN BLOTT:
"Spinster" on wedding certificate, aged 21.

Marriage Notes for MARY BLOTT and WILLIAM WOOD:
Both William Wood and Mary Ann Blott sign with an "X", as do witnesses Charles Milward and Eliza Colton. The ceremony was performed after banns by Richard G. Fish, curate.

Child of MARY BLOTT and WILLIAM WOOD is:
3. i. WILLIAM7 WOOD, b. 09 Mar 1863, Greets Green, Staffordshire; d. Bef. 1931, Oldbury, Worcestershire.

Many thanks, grangers14. I haven't got the full marriage record for William Blott and Hannah Cooper, but it was 25 Oct 1841. Curiously, although he may still have been alive for the 1851 census and Hannah Blott describes herself then as married and living with her children in Duke Street, West Bromwich, I can't find William. A pity - that might have given his place of birth!
