If I can throw my two pennyworth in: I actually knew Alf Brettell b. 1899 quite well in my childhood. If we're talking about the same man, he was Alfred Ridsdale Brettell b. 30 June 1899 in fact in Smethwick, died 1980, son of Edward Nock Brettell b. 19 June 1858 in Smethwick and Elizabeth Povey, grandson of John Brettell b. West Brom 1829, d. 1901. Alf Brettell was my grandfather's best friend, I have photos. He was lovely chap, slightly melancholy, was in Oldbury Ambulance Corps with my granddad during WWII, looked very like John Le Mesurier. He lived in Stone Street, Oldbury, was married with a son and a daughter, if I remember rightly.
