Did anyone watch it
I did and I really really enjoyed it.

i watched it! I thought in the beginning it was late 40's East End but it was supposed to be 1958!!
I dunno i'm a bit ... what do you call it? Usually the BBC are spot on with period pieces but it was annoying me.The feel was for me wrong.Was it me or do others think like that?

you were say 10 then so you would know if it was genuine or not

Antie Em would have been 12 but she's from Tividale.
If she's seen it i wonder what she thought.
In fact what we need is the opinion of someone who lived in the backstreet slums of a big city!!
London or Brum!! Some dolly bird of the 60's ! Pity there's no one on here who fits the bill.

Flicked through it on I player. I was 14 in 1958 and remember the fashions - seems OK to me. Don't forget, we'd only just got over rationing by then - so the 50's fashions weren't very much different from the 40's for some people. The suit she is wearing a the beginning of the programme, I had one like that in 1960. I have to say, I love the 50's fashions - very feminine and classy. Designing 1950's wedding dresses at the moment.

I remember people who lived like that. A family who lived a few doors away from us, never had cups and saucers - they used jam jars to drink from. My mom had to become really hard when people came to "borrow" a cup of something - then never got it back, or even lending money "til' the end of the week". People just had too many children - and some men thought they had done enough after a day at work, then went to the pub and came home drunk, ready to make more children.

I just thank God my dad was a 'New' man way before his time. He could cook and clean and even knew what the iron was for. The only time he went to the pub was on a Sunday morning when he dropped us off at Gran's house and took Granddad for a pint down the Wagon. My mom tells us that my little sister came in one day for a bowl of water and a flannel. Mom though she was washing her dolls, but when she went outside, found Gill washing a little girl who lived down the road. Gill, aged about 8 said she was fed up of seeing her dirty, and it was about time someone gave her a wash - that would have been about 1958. It didn't just happen in the East End.

Really enjoyed watching it, I shall remember to record it tonight.

I didn't see it but must try to catch it tonight!

Our daughter qualified as a midwife in the mid 90's but came out of it because there was no time to actually care for baby or mum and moral on the wards was so low!
She's now a qualified accountant and very happy

It's a brilliant series, and was just like that, last night they played two super pieces of music fro 40s - 50s both favourites of us when going to local dances.

Was that the one that burnt down - just before they built the old bus station?

Just down from the Hippodrome in Dudley, was a roller skating rink. I used to go there with my mates on a Saturday afternoon and in the evening they turned it into a dance hall. I learned to Rock and Roll there. Such an exciting time - there had never been music like it before. My mom used to make me skirts with loads of net underneath - I used to soak the underskirts in sugar water and hang them on the line to "stiffen". Had to smile when I saw one of the nurses put an aspirin into her suspenders, I remember using a button or a sixpence.

Yes Sparkstopper..........Went to Adelphi often, and used to walk back to Bentley........half p........

I saw it last night and because of the music they played it kind of gave it a 50's feel.
Last week they didn't play any music at all.
I'm still not convinced that they have the period down pat but if you old codgers say it has then who am i to argue.
