Hi everyone, could I please have some help again in finding the place of death or any info at all on baby David Westwood born about Jan.1880. He would have been my grandmother, Sarah Jane Westwood"™s brother. Baby David"™s father was Joseph Westwood b.4th Nov. 1852, a Blacksmith. His mother was Mary Westwood, nee Smith. B.1851. I was told as a eight year old by my nan that her family went to America (that"™s why they don"™t show up on the 1881 census) and from some searching some time ago, I found a Joseph Westwood, Blacksmith, who travelled on his own on the SS Helvitia and arrived in NY 23.6.1879. I also found a Mary Westwood, with Benj age 8 yrs and baby David infant, on the SS Nevada and arrived NY 27.3.1880. In the NY 1880 census they are at 126 President St. Troy 13th Ward. At sometime, they came back to England, but I can"™t find them on the return ship. Why they returned I don"™t know, did David die in America and was that the reason, or did he die in England ? My grandmother was born, 28. 3. 1889 Near Wrights Lane, R. Regis, so they didn"™t last long in America for what ever reason. Any help or thoughts on this would be much appreciated, many Thanks jonboy.
PS many Thanks to everyone who contributed to my first post about the 4 dead siblings on the 1911 cens.

Hi Linell, Yes that's the family on BCC, BUT I don't think we have the right wife for Joseph I've always had Mary nee Smith as only one year older than Joseph and I'm sure she was b,1851, not, "about 19th March 1871" as it's got for her.
The birth you have found, David 1879 dudley 6C 139 could well be him though as he was 6 mths old in the 1st June 1880 New York census. But I do wonder if he died in America and that was why they came back home to England - if he did how would I find that death ?

19th March 1871 is the date entered for their marriage, it says born abt 1852 for Mary.

I think it would be very hard to find the death of a small child in America - and you don't even know if he did die there. The best hope seems to be to find the return boat trip and see if he came back, but that won't be easy either.

Hi everyone, thanks for your comments, to answer Northern Lass about Davids birth date, like peterd had said, it was from the 1880 NY cens. Unfortunately there is nothing at all in my bible about David, birth or death, in fact only births are in it - my gparents were very superstitious, it may have been a bad luck thing, like cutting your nails on Sunday, putting shoes on a table, always buy the lucky heather from the gypsy who calls etc. I only remember as an 8 year old my nan saying that a baby had died and how sad it was ! Now she may have been on about her little brother David or my granddads siblings, the 4 on the 1911 census in my last post. Of cause, I didn't know much about death at that age and I don't remember much else what was said, if anything.
Yes gardener, if only I could find the passenger list for the return journey, that would be the key.
Sorry about the confusion of Mary's date - I see now it was marriage I picked, not birth.
