Hi, New to the forum and genealogy

Hi,
I am new here and have begun researching my family history.
I think my family have come from the South of England mainly, and I am doing what I can to find out about surnames DUNHAM, WALLACE, ELDRIDGE, HOAD, CHARMAN, BALLANTYNE.
I have hit brick walls when I find relatives with the name John Smith
and also one relative with a wonderfully unique name, which he hated so much he used a host of others!
Having done a free trial with Ancestry.co.uk and collected what info I can from BMD indexes I am currently trying to decide which site to subscribe to, there's so many, it's so confusing!
