I am researching my Jackson ancestors who lived in York and Pocklington (a market town) in the East Riding until the 19th century. I have reached the stage where I need to go there to do further research into parish registers etc. Can anyone advise where I might find these records - I mean are they in centralised archives in York and Beverly or at the church or at local level? I should like to know before venturing up there from London.

Parish Registers are usually at archives some churches have them too.

So what are you after cos you can go armed to the relevant archives with info
that will take you directly to the exact page in the register

I mean by that there are websites that give you day month year and church
and
websites that give you year and the church and a page no in the PRegister to look at.

can you give us one to look at for you so we can advise

the archives only have church ceremonies ie bapts burials marriages

if you want birth death certifs they are regis office
the marriages if a church one are same at regis office as at archives as church ceremony

if Marriage is at regis office you would need to get certif from them

Ancestry just published hundreds of Yorkshire registers, poor law records, school registers etc including the original scans, not just transcripts.

I have had a ball going though all my Yorky relatives.

I have a sub to Ancestry but its Yorkshire records seem to be mainly for the West Riding and my family all come from the East Riding.

I am interested in a couple of things: I know that Matthew Jackson married Ann Blanchard of Pocklington in 1755 and they had two sons (at least) John and Matthew. The eldest John, was a plumber and glazier in York, the second Matthew was a tallow chandler in Pocklington. (Their father Matthew was also tallow chandler in Pocklington). I know this much is correct because I have found legal documents relating to Ann Blanchard Jackson's will online (in the Beverly records office) and she specifically names her two sons, their names John and Matthew and their occupations and locations as above.

John the eldest son of Matthew and Ann, the one in York, married Hannah Bass in 1786. I do not have his birth date. I think it is around 1763. John and Hannah gave their children the full range of Jackson christian names : Thomas, Richard, Matthew (b1789) and John (b1786) who was also a plumber and glazier in York.

After that the trail gets blurred. There is a Matthew Jackson born in Pocklington in 1760 but I can find no further trace of him. Then there is a Matthew Jackson, born 1768, who in 1798 married Mary Turner who lived in Hayton which is very near Pocklington. They too had a large family with the full complement of Jackson Christian names including John b1798 and Matthew b1801. But apart from their son John, I cannot trace any of the others, and especially not their son Matthew.

There is a Matthew Jackson listed as the Postmaster in Pocklington in 1823 trade directory. So which Matthew is he? Is he one born in 1760 or the one born in 1768? Or may even the grandson of Matthew and Ann, the one born in 1789?

I need to look at birth and marriage certificates which will be held somewhere in the East Riding, maybe in York or maybe in Beverly.

Thx for all yr comments. Problem is I am now at that dangerous stage, for Matthew Jackson, where I am making assumptions without underlying proof. In other cases I do have proof, in form of legal docs on line or detailed birth information. But the Jackson trail more or less disappears with Matthew born 1768 and his son b 1801. I have no direct evidence they are descendents of Matthew and Ann. So the family trail in the area peters out in the early 1800s

It is clear the Jackson clan had lots of boys all given the same christian names from generation to generation: John, Richard, Matthew, Thomas and Christopher. Never Robert, Edward, William, Henry or George for example. So a clutch of the family names is a good indicator but it is not a dead cert. For that I need birth certificates, marriage certificates or death certificates or entries in the Parish registers.

Hence asking where these are stored for a} York, b) Pocklington and c) Hull. There is a records office for the East Riding in Beverly but there also seem to be records at York university and I am not sure where to go for Hull. (There are some early christening records on Family Search. Ancestry for Yorkshire has a lot of records for the West Riding, but is patchy with a lot less for the East Riding where my ancestors lived.)

Hence my question.

(usually on their website) it will give you relevant churches
