There is nothing left of Low Town which is a pity since I have hundreds of cousins from there....

Has anybody seen a city map of Low Town from the mid to late 19th century?

I am trying to get an idea of how census address such as "2 Court 5 House Low Town" translate to actual locations.

i think these house were back to back homes behind the shops were the court is know and the police station

I have a Godrey Edition Old ordanance map for Oldbury and spon lane
and this area on the google map

Flash Road to the left -John Street running across - then Broadwell Road coming down
in that Box there is a School and lots of buildings no names on them

If that is the correct area then the Sandwell archives may have more detailed maps

Moved it to the BC towns and villages section.

If anyone is going to Sandwell could they pm Mark and maybe have a look at some of the
Old maps for him please as he is in Australia

I know there are loads of maps if possible a section could be photocopied and then
sent to him

Mark can you confirm the area we are talking about please is it that Box of John street with
Broadwell road and Flash Road either side.

but which Roads are near the Police station...what road is it on
is it that area of JOhn St / Flash Road /Broadwell road

The archives have more detailed maps

Low town is at the bottom of Oldbury near Broadwell Road, I thought the police station was at the top of Oldbury, opposite the Big House, but I'm not certain. There is a new police building now at the bottom of Oldbury, I thought this was built on the site of the Polar Bear Cafe. Try the Oldbury History Society here : http://www.historyofoldbury.co.uk - there is a mention of Low Town in the book Old Time Oldbury.

A mate of mine from school lived in Low Town and,i'm talking 1959/60 when we were choirboys at Chris Church Oldbury,anyway in the winter months the street Low Town,and it was only a street, was always dark and gloomy.On both sides of the street you had houses i saw no sign of courtyards which you tended to get with back to back houses.There was a pub there as well.The Oddfellows?You know thinking back i only ever went down there in the cold winter nights!!
Low Town was on your right walking down Birmingham Street towards Smethwick just over Bustle Bridge just down the road from Christ Church. Is it still there?I think it is although it's derelict land now.Or not?
I only walked down there a month ago well as far as where Woolworths used to be!!

i live in bridge st oldbury whichis by broadwell park when i waas growing up all the shops in low town had been pull down my mother said these were nice shops
