Hello everyone
a long time since I posted anything, but other things have taken me away from genealogy for a while!
I know that a lot of us on the forum share a common Shakespeare ancestry, so wondered if anyone may be able to help with a query I have recently received from someone:

I have been given the following details:

Daniel Shakespeare born 1864, Dudley. His son Albert, born 1904, Dudley, married Sylvia Dudley (ie surname Dudley!).

I have the following from freeBMD:
Daniel Jun 1863 Dudley 6c 123
Albert Jun 1904 Dudley 6c 109
(Both births)
And the marriage Albert Shakespeare/ Sylvia M Dudley, Sep 1931, Dudley 6b 2432

I have been unable to find Daniel in the 1881 census, for whatever reason, can anyone locate him in 1861, 1871, or any of the censuses from 1891 onwards (1911 would be good as his son Albert would be with him), but 1871 would presumably find him with his parents?

Wow Mark, that was quick, thank you.
I think that 1871 Vine St Dudley one is him.
Will look now to see what else I have on this (ie his fathers) family.

Have now realisedI have Thomas & Margaret on the Shakespeare website in 1861:

Piece Enumeration District Ecclesiastical District
RG 09-2073 26 Brierley Hill
Address: 72 Dudley Street
Forename Surname Age (years)
Thomas Shakespear 33
Margaret Shakespear 33
Joseph Shakespear 13
Thomas Shakespear 11
Harriet Shakespear 9
William Shakespear 7
Margaret Shakespear 4
John Shakespear

The baptisms of the children are in the Brierley Hill registers (also on the website), which tells us that Thomas was a Blacksmith, liing at Harts Hill (Oak Farm prior to this in 1848)

Found them in the 1881 census:
Margaret is a widow, and the second (!!) Johns age matches that of Daniel (Think this John is a mistransciption and should be Daniel - no wonder I couldn't find him) - the other siblings match those in other censuses and the baptism register, and the street matches the 1871 census:

Could some find Thomas born about 1829 in the 1851 census - this will help to sort out his parents: we have two possibilities, one b 1828 and on in 1829, both in Brierley Hill.
Both survived to raise families - the other one is in the 1881 census in Derbyshire, the one we are looking for was married by 1851 but if the other one is still unmarried and possibly with his parents this would identify them. Of course, finding their marriages would help!

Have a possible death for Thomas:

From the IGI: buried 24 March 1878 aged 49 Kingswinford

From freeBMD: Shakespeare, Thomas, age 49, Dudley 6c 102 - March Quarter 1878

Hi Jan
That's him ! Another piece of the puzzle, and an instant family tree for the person who contacted me.
I would try to add some of this to BCC but think my access has been removed?
I will check the details of the 'other' Thomas and post them here later - that will be another small branch confirmed
