Here is one of my brickwalls...... :? Who is Jane's Daddy and what happened to Elizabeth??

One of my gr.grandmothers was JANE POWELL, born Jan.1, 1853 in Much Cowarne, Herefordshire according to the copy of her birth registration.... I always thought she was born in 1854 and wonder if they put the wrong year by accident, it was Jan. 1st!

Here's what I have....

On Jane's birth registration her mother is listed as ELIZABETH POWELL. NO father!! Jane can be found on the 1861 and 1871 census's living with her grandparents, THOMAS and SUSAN POWELL... there are also different family members living with them at these times. On the 1871 census the transcriber even gave Jane a father, one of her uncles, but if you look at the original you will see this is an error :( . THOMAS, born in Pencombe, c 1800 and SUSAN, born in Sutton, c 1805 had at least 5 children, going by the census's. They were born in Sutton.
ELIZABETH c1831
JANE c1834
MARY c1836
THOMAS c1839
EMMA c1843

On the 1851 census ELIZABETH is a maid for RICHARD MEREDITH, a farmer of 200 acres at 23 Upper Bridgend Much Cowarne. ( a couple of "Daddy " prospects there)

When JANE married on May 16, 1880 she got married in London. On her marriage registration she states her father is JOHN POWELL, coachman, in London and I did find a JOHN POWELL, cabman on the 1881 census of London..he's in his 50's and has a very young wife and a 1 year old daughter. I do realize that JANE could have told a lie. IF this was true then the ELIZABETH POWELL who was her mother would have been married in to the family and not the daughter. :?

JANE married ALFRED HENSON from Godmanchester, Huntingdonshire and they had 6 children. Their 2nd would become my grandmother! In Jan. 1893 their last son was born and shortly after his birth he died from diptheria. Within a few weeks the next 2 oldest sisters also died and then in May, JANE died from it also. Grandma wasn't quite 10 years old and had to become the housekeeper. She had a younger sister and an older brother...( also a brick wall!!)

That's the basis of my story with JANE POWELL..any help would be appreciated. In summary... I would love to find out who JANE'S father was and whatever happened to ELIZABETH... I can't find a marriage ( for certain) or a death... there are so many POWELLS.

Thankyou

Farmers daughter :-)

Hi Peterd!

Thanks for checking for me.
Did you find the christening on A*? I don't have that so would be interested in looking at it. Thanks.

I'd suggest accessing the parish record with the baptism. (either through familysearch or other sources) often the clerks made notes on suspected fathers in the margins. Transcribers usualy do not include these nor do they show up on official sertificates. I had one christening that showed on the IGI as a son of George and Susan - when I read the actual parish listing, the clerk had noted that Susan had lived in another man's house and not seen her 'husband' in over a year.

 Hi

Jane was obviously illegitimate and Elizabeth Powell unmarried with a father invented by Jane for her marriage and as there's no evidence of here living with her mother it is doubtful Elizabeth married the father

I can't see where you find the link between Thomas and Elizabeth as father and daughter
or
MARY c1836 & THOMAS c1839 -you've also missed James born ca 1831

Sorry Alec....

Because I work I don't have as much time as I would like to keep up with the forums.

I found Elizabeth as Thomas and Susan's daughter on the 1841 census and I also have some other papers. I will look them up and post the information as I traced all the families the best I could from afar... The Powells seemed to have a few unmarried mother's in the family  ( NOT my proper grandmother's ancestors  )

Is this still a Brick Wall?
Or have you solved it?

Unless otherwise advised this will be moved to archived section
