The NHS recognises it at least. It starts when the days get shorter I suppose, and hits max around Christmas time.
A friend of mine swears by one of those light things, a bit like a lit-up window pane, you have it on while you eat breakfast and feel much better. Getting outside every day for a short walk should help too.

This is going to sound like "New Age" mumbo jumbo buts it is not.

I use artifical light to help control narcolepsy.

Light levels are important for your circadian rhythm.

If the brightness and length of light diminishes quicker than your circadian rhythm can adjust then your metabolic system can cause issues.

There may be a period of time where you are more tired, your hormone levels are wrong and ultradian rhythms, such as your sleep cycles, are interfered with.

Eventually your circadian rhythm should adjust to the new light/dark cycle.

The International Space Station and Space Shuttle use artificial day/night cycles to improve the health of astronauts.

They're doing a trial at my hospital to see if vitamin D supplements help. It's not a typical year to do the trial as the experts recon that because there was so much rain last summer people weren't out as much and therefore are already starting to be deficient in vit D.
Light therapy is supposed to be good too.

Winter Blues are definitely a very really problem for many people. And of course everyone feels like that from time to time.

I think there are definitely ways to pull yourself out of it though and many of those just mean having a healthy lifestyle ( meaning, exercising, eating right, still going out to socialize) There are many great things about winter. I usually love it until about the middle of January. The last 2 months are always the hardest but i guess most people feel like that.

Here is an article about how to beat the winter blues....... basically reinforcing what I said above:)
