As most company's now make sure their copper cables (on huge very heavy drums) are under lock and key, the copper theives have now started nicking small bronze figures etc from peoples graves (then they mely them down for the copper), and copper drain pipes from churches.
It must be dreadful for the relatives, they are not very careful as to how they do it, so some graves are left in a dreadful state.
Some are so reckless they also nick the copper cables from between the lamp-posts, apparently they don't value their own lives!

They must be desperate for money. In a way you have to pity them.

I've just spent two weeks on Jury Service and from that experience, it seems the main reason to gain money from stealing is to pay for drink and drugs.

You hear of so much copper and scrap etc going missing, that I get the feeling that it's organised.
One of my husbands' relatives own's a company that makes elevator shafts, they had just finished an order which was loaded on to a lorry ready for shipping- it was only "unguarded" for one night before it was nicked. They did find it again, but not before the scrap dealer had destroyed it.
A lot factories have a container with scrap metal in it, they have to really secure it well! Where my husband used to work theives got in despite a high barbed wire fence and relaitively good security.
They should make the scrap dealers more liable if they buy stolen scrap - they should have to prove that it's legit before they but it, and as they are dealing in stolen goods the penalties should be enough to deter them. Although, I suspect some of the stolen metals go abroad.

They took all the brass and metal name plates from Mirfield church just down the road from me, but pleased to say the scrap dealer turned them in.
