Youngest brother in hospital after spider bite...

He is supposed to be moving to his new house in N.S.W tommorow.

This morning, as I was helping him load some things into his car, he have a yelp and dropped the box he was carrying.

Two nice fang marks just above his right wrist.

He started to get a bit giddy and the arm puffed up so I applied a pressure bandage up to his elbow and rushed him down the hospital.

Didn't have time to look for the spider so we didn't know what type it was.

So they gave him anti-venom for the more common ones.

He rang to say they are going to keep him in for a day and that necrosis has started.

Probably means it was a white tail spider which are not deadly but can cause huge holes in your flesh.

He would have been better off getting bit by a Redback. They can kill but no necrosis.

Ouch! Good thing you responded quickly and, I'm guessing, correctly. Hope he doesn't have too bad a recovery.

That doesn't sound very sensible!

Redbacks are very pretty spiders and I have kept them for a while to show nieces/nephews/daughters what they look like.

What wasn't sensible was the rumour that the C.S.I.R.O was paying 15 cents a spider when I was a wee lad.

Apparently for venom research.

We ended up with jars full of them before realising it was a joke.

I remember tipping all mine out near my sisters bedroom window. :P

My brother is OK but he has a horrible scar where the necrosis started on his wrist.

Luckily it seems to have stopped, unlike my dad who ended up with a horrible hole in his leg.
