Jo :)

Yes the 1841 is definitely Meeting Street Oldbury. John says he was not born in the County? In 1851 he says born Dudley, could be Dudley Staffs :?:

Ok, not sure if this is relevant but I was researching the John Toy with Jane Toy strand and Ancestry suggested Jane Lester as a record to look at for 1841 census. Didn't tell me much.

A search on LDS didn't give me anything either.

So I went back to Ancestry, looked up Jane Lester marriages and then I looked up John Toy also.

I found:

Jane Lester (Apr-May-June 1841) in West Bromwich

and

John Toy (Apr-May-June 1841) in West Bromwich

It's a long shot, but could that be connected? I also looked up Martha Toy b 1851 in West Midlands BMD and she was registered in West Bromwich too.

So this John would have been married before, that index doesn't say if they were widowed, but I guess its likely.

I have a John Toy marriage to Mary Beck in 1818 in Halesowen.

I also have 2 Mary Toy's who died in 1839 and 1841 in West Bromwich. Could be related.

Are we getting away from the salient point a bit? :)

Nick that is the Index you need to order the certificate from the General Register Office, there is no information until it arrives through your Letter Box.

John Toy bach otp and Mary Beck sp otp Married 19.4.1818 Halesowen, by Banns, John and Mary both made their mark, Witnesses were Wm Corbett and Mariah Harris.

Think you are getting blown off track now, your best course of action it to order a birth certificate for one of John and Rosannah's children, as suggested by NL.

I found a Baptism for a Joseph Toy 17.2.1819 Halesowen son of Wm and and Winifred Toy The Hill Nailer. Could Winifred be the missing first wife? Here:-

Sorry looking back through the thread to get my bearings. Wm Toy born in 1820 didn't marry Sarah Smart, his father Wm Toy b abt 1788 married Sarah Smart.

Right, to get back on topic. :)

I'm trying to connect William Toy b abbt 1788 to WIlliam Toy and Elizabeth Eastwood as parents.

Why is it not linked yet, and what do you need to connect?

HI Nick, William Toy born about 1788. I really think you will have to leave it at that, just write in Wm's notes that you believe his parents are Wm and Betty. The records all run out at some point, unless you want to spend days in the Archives looking through dozens of Parish Registers. I really don't think you will get any further back. I am stuck on one of my Gt x 3 Grandfathers. I have him born Halesowen about 1796, but have no idea who his parents were. I would do some research on one of your other lines, leave it for awhile something may turn up.

I appreciate the advise, but I'm really not prepared to give it up just yet.

If my family name was Jones then I would have given up a long long time ago, but it's not a popular name, there will be connections. I look at it as a process of elimination. Sure it's a challenge, but its something worth doing.

These are the facts I have.

I know that a Wm and Betty married in 1786. I also know that they had a son called Wm who was baptised in 1790. I also know that my Wm Toy was born around 1788. If I have to go down to the Archives in the Midlands I will do. :)

However, something in this thread has sparked my interest, this Winnifred Toy, who could have been the mother of my Wm Toy b 1820, son of Wm Toy b 1788. I don't currently have a mother as yet, so that could be something I could investigate too.

Thanks for all your help though. Much appreciated.

What records can I expect to find down at the archives?
