Saw a recipe last time we visited Duxford. It's quite high in natural sugar. There was also a recipe for chocolate truffles made with cocoa powder and potatoes!

My mum makes a great chocolate cake with beetroot in it. Nice and moist and rich.

My mother was a good 'country' cook who had been taught by her mother and then carried on as other ingredients became available post WWII. My grandmother was an upholsterer/seamstress who worked for many of the 'upper-crust' families in the area and was considered to be under-stairs rather than above which meant she spent time in the kitchens where she picked up lots of 'foreign' influences; she would sometimes put 'spices' (mainly nutmeg, cloves or cinnamon) into her stews and always made her own pickling spice mix for her onions which would always contain a chilli (not easy to find during the war) so I don't think that the WWII diet needed to be quite as simple as many a busy housewife made out.
Anyway, back to me, I have always enjoyed my food and when I was eventually chucked out of home I realised that if I wanted to continue eating in the manner to which I'd become accustomed I was going to have to learn how to cook myself. I found that I really enjoyed it. Many of my friends were/are musicians, something I have no abilities in whatsoever, so I was able to contribute to our circle by doing the cooking. I also found it was a girl magnet and I was always in demand at parties etc.
In my early to mid teens I was a really fussy eater, none of that foreign muck for me; I used to enfuriate my parents by insisting on omelette and chips when they took me out to the local Chinese for a special occasion. Then I discovered beer! I was involved with the Campaign for Real Ale and hung out with a crowd of, mainly, older fellows and we would usually repair to the Curry house or Chinese after a session sampling the joys that the local pubs had to offer. I wasn't going to show myself up in their company by being prissy about the food I ate and anyway I was usually so drunk I could hardly taste it so I joined in with whatever was going. One day, after a quieter than usual night I woke realising that I'd actually quite enjoyed the meal the previous night so resolved to sneak off quietly on my own to try the fare without the consumption of copious quantities of beer beforehand. And that, my learned friends, was that. There's not much I don't like, you can keep your swede, oysters and samphire, but I'm always willing to try new things at least once, usually more often, as I discovered that an early aversion to asparagus has changed through tolerance to enjoyment so who knows what I might be missing out on.
We're out again tonight so for lunch today it'll be Osso Buco (from the freezer, we batch cook stews and the like) with a risotto Milanese.

Had a good old fashioned B.B.Q!
Did myself a lovely Kangaroo steak and some Kangaroo Sausages (Kanga Bangas).
Nothing fancy about our B.B.Q unlike some of my mates who have these mega expensive models that need a PHd to use.
