That's a brilliant find Jan. I tried to find Wm Smart Snr in 1841, nothing coming up for a Wm Smart born Northamptonshire, there is this one Registration District of Bourn Lincolnshire where Selina Roberts lived, with a wife Mary. They already have a son Wm, wonder if he died and they had your William

I should think that if Selina Roberts and William Smart were co-habiting then there was nothing to stop the birth registration having "formerly Roberts" on it - that is just like my Grandfather's entry where his mother is formerl Downs but no marriage existed. The records people would not know different.
On the other hand if the baptism was at the local church then they would have do it under the mother's name because the truth was known. I don't see any mystery there.

Isn't Joseph Smart aged 1 in 1861 born Northamptonshire? That doesn't point to them being settled in Cradley Heath while William Smart was a baby.

Spencer Dodson was from Nottinghamshire (Beckingham) not Northamptonshire.

also I found William Smart snr at the workhouse
I think he is the one on free bmd dying in 1893

Mon 10 July 1893 -William Smart- dead- married- parish Tipton- dead last meal B
so no age but the death cert should match this one
as info from regis is that the one in 1893 died workhouse I will send for that one

Was there any luck finding the grandson John (aged 8 in 1881, born Wigan, Lancs) in either 1891 or 1901?

We only have the two sons for William and Selina don't we? William born 1852 and Joseph born 1860. Joseph is too young to be John's father surely? So unless there are unfound children that just leaves William as father of John. Perhaps it would be possible to find a marriage for John and get his father from that?

with Selina "Roberts" and William "Roberts"(should be Smart(
