It also looks like Holman on the Image, is it mistranscribed or indexed wrong. or did they change the name.
1881. High St, Eston, Yorkshire.
Samuel Holman 37. General labourer. born Spowden, Lincoln.
Jane Holman 34. Somerset.
Mary Holman 13. Kent.
Samuel Holman 12. Chatham.
Ellen Holman 8. Wolsingham, Norfolk.
That was well spotted Jimmy - Mind you they obviuosly had problems either remembering where the chiildren were born or communicating with the locals on census night-
did you notice Ellen in 1891
Ellen Hudson 18. Dau, Dressmaker. born, Whissington, Durham.
Hi MG,
Yes I did notice, very similar named places, but with Navvies they had to go to where the work was, so it was possibly quite easy to forget where children and them selves were born.

1881. Battlte.
Samuel Hudson 27, born Barnstaple, Devon, Bricklayers Labourer.
From what I have found, you can totally ignore this one, on the bases he was born in Devon.
All the other details found look right to me.

But so was his partner Emma Somerwill, just down the road from Barnstaple.

How do you know that the Samuel born in Devon is Emma's partner, you havn't found them together. you can't go by that, Just because they may have been born close to each.

I'd like to open this up again as i have found more out recently.
In short, I am trying to find my great grandfather Samuel John Hudson, father of my grandad George Henry Hudson, no record of Samuel John Hudson exists anywhere that we know of apart from being named on grandad Georges brothers and sisters birth certs as the father, grandads mum was Emma Hudson, maiden name Somerwill.
No birth record of grandad has ever been found either, until now, verbal family history has it that grandad was born at 41 Alma Villas, Hastings on 12 Jan 1906, I have just received in the post a birth Cert for Henry George Sumerfield born at 41 Alma VIllas Hastings on the 12 Jan 1906 to Emma Sumerfield with no father listed.
Now to me it seems she has registered him under her maiden name (no proof of her marrying SJH exists despite grandads elder brothers and sister being registered as Hudson), and there was a mispronounciation or misspelling and went in as Sumerfield, does this sound reasonable to you experts out there ??
Unless there were 2 kids born at that address on the 12 Jan 1906 both with a mother called Emma it must be him right ?
On the 1911 census he is listed as Henry George Hudson, so he has assumed the rest of the familys name, and he was latterly known as George Henry Hudson all his life, thats was he married as in 1928.
This is probably an obvious question, but as the father on his cert is just shown with a line through it, I assume the search for my great grandad has come to a full stop ???
