Hi Paul,

I have just seen your recent exchanges when I googled 'James Michael Laing' as the name features in my tree. I have a little information and a couple of marriage certificates that appear to be relevant.
I am interested predominantly in the Thompson Shipbuilding family in Sunderland, and whilst I am descended from Robert Thompson 1797-1860 shipbuilder, I came through one of his daughters and therefore do not have the Thompson name.

I think (if I've got your rough age as 50) your Great Great Great grandparents were James Michael Laing (1839-?) & Margaret Thompson (b 2 Nov 1841-?) James Michael Laing appears on the 1861 census as a lodger with the family he was soon to marry into the following year. See towards the bottom of this page:

Confusingly his future wife Margaret wasn't at home with her family.
The research on this part of the family is still 'ongoing' so it hasn't yet been uploaded to the website. There's a lot more to do before I feel confident enough to send it to my cousin George Graham.
Their eldest son John Laing born 19 April 1863 according to the birth certificate I have seen, who married Agnes Laws as you already know, is buried with his wife in Mere Knolls Cemetery in Fulwell, Sunderland.

I have been doing some work on the Mere Knolls Cemetery, Sunderland burial register recently, and have also found:
James Michael Laing age 1 month, died 25 Jan 1955 at 30 Gosforth St, Monkwearmouth, buried 28 Jan 1955 the son of James Michael Laing! It appears from the GRO birth indexes that his mother was a Miss Wankling or Miss Heslop. Any ideas who this mother was?
Interestingly there's also the death of a James Michael Laing 29 July 1921 at 22 Gosforth St. Monkwearmouth aged 18 mths the son of James Michael Laing, buried at the same cemetery (but not same grave) on 2 Aug 1921. This Chap's mother was Elizabeth Jane W. Hiles. The couple then went on to have another son in 1923 also James Michael Laing, and I suspect 9 other children, though this is not confirmed yet.

Do these bits appear relevant to the knowledge that you already have?
I have certainly picked up a few clues already from Jimmy's replies, which I assume he must have found through Ancestry.co.uk, as I was able to see them there myself when he pointed me in the right direction.

Best regards,

Grant White
