We'd have been in a pretty pickle without elastic - especially the school ones we had to wear for netball - I remember when we had cotton knee socks and had to put a bit of elastic round them to keep them up. Made your leg go numb after a couple of hours.

Obviously of the G-string persuasion rather than the bloomer.

These days i tend to lean towards bloomers for some unknown reason.
