I have ordered the Marriage certificate from
http://www.gro.gov.uk.
We'll just have to wait and see if these are the right people.
Thanks to everyone for the help so far.

I received the marriage certificate on Christmas eve and I don't think it has helped as much as I had hoped.
I feel that the groom could be my grandfather because the certificate says the grooms middle name is Edward, he is about the right age, his occupation and his fathers name and occupation are also what I expected to see.
The bride on the other hand does not feel right as there is no mention of Helena as a first name, no occupation and fathers name not present because he is deceased.
There are however two addresses on the certificate, which may help.
The details are as follows
26th Feb 1916 Wandsworth
Ernest Edward Townsend Engineers Milling Machinist Father : Charles Townsend , Mechanical Engineer
Maude Green No Occupation Father : ------ Green Theatrical Agent
Both aged 22 yrs
Both have address as “ late of 46 Himley road Tooting, now residing at 4 Grove road Mitchamâ€Â
It was signed EE Townsend and M Green in the presence of (what looks like) C Townsend and N Smith.
There is a good chance that Ernest Edward had a brother or father named Charles as this would tie in with the story my dad told me involving the Vase and the reason Ernest Edward changed his name to Charles between 1921 and 1941.
My search on ancestry 1901 census brought up an Ernest Edwin Townsend Born 1896 wandsworth with a brother named Charles and father named Charles and mother Jane Elizabeth. Residing at 4 Grove cottages Teddington. This must all be a coincidence as Mitcham and Teddington are quite far apart.

I have traced my grandfathers family now.
He was in fact born Ernest Edwin Townsend. My mum remembered that she visited an aunt of my dads but had no name for her, the Aunt had a daughter called Geraldine so I worked back from there and found her mother Irene EE Townsend who was Ernests sister born after the 1911 census was taken.
The camberwell Helena Maud Green (Daughter of Arthur and Alice) is not my grandmother. I found the niece (living) of this Helena and spoke with her via Email, she told me that her Aunt married Freddie Woodnutt in 1916.
So now I am really stuck, I have no births to go on at all and I can't be sure if the marriage certificate I have is actually them although he does fit very well apart from the middle name of Edward but he is also Ernest Edward on my dads birth cert. This chap didn't seem to like any of the names his parents gave him
It may be that Helena was indeed French after all, and maybe went back to France which could be a reason for my dad never knowing her. We tried to work out when she left and think it was around 1925.
Can anyone give me an idea of where I should be looking next to find my Grandmother please.
