We'll be hiring a car at whatever port we arrive in. I'm looking at the logistics of touring as well. Brian wants to go to Whitby, and we're heading for the Highlands and Islands for the main part of our trip. So, rather than go down and up again, I thought a landing at Poole and just travelling Northish through the New Forest and the Cotswolds to the Black Country, across to the Yorkshire coast, then up into Scotland from there, would give us some nice sightseeing along the way.

It's only 152 miles and about 3 hours on the Google Maps suggested route from Poole to Worcester, or 167ml and 3 hours 15 mins to Kidderminster ( that's another place I could look for a B&B). Going off to look there now ...

I love Whitby!
My daughter worked at The Pier House, in Port Appin and that was a wonherful place, the scenery out of this world! Her partner is from Gairloch, not been there but that looks amazing too.
I'm sure you will have a great time!

Thanks, Pete. It looks lovely! I hadn't planned to visit Durham this time (though I really like it), but I might just revise my plans now

You're right, Jo. The country around both Port Appin and Gairloch are both incredibly beautiful. Oh, it's just as well I'm going to China in the meantime, or the anticipation might just be unbearable! Hmmm... Port Appin... Now can I fit it in to our route?

Yes!!! - On the way to Fort William!

Ohhhh Scotland absolutely beautiful. Our first visit was in 2005 and we've been there every year since.

Hope you have a great time Di and look forward to meeting up with you and the gang.

Sure will as soon as I know myself. I do know we arrive on the continent on May 3rd and hope to have a 15 day Eurail Pass from the 4th. When we actually arrive in England will depend on whether we can use that pass for part of the journey across to the UK and hence whether we travel by train or overnight ferry.

At the moment, I'm all for an overnight cruise, in which case we would land in Newcastle and come across form there.

Would it be best for me to aim at the next Saturday for a meet up, rather than a week night, to make it easier for folks to get there?

Di just trying to narrow it down a bit to a couple of dates to enable people to make plans, we have the following Saturdays in May - 8th 15th 22nd or 29th. Can you say which would be most likely?

Most likely 22nd, I think. We've just booked our ferry across from France on the 18th, so that makes it pretty sure.
