The story goes that when they used to travel to India by Ship, that those who could afford to chose the side of the ship that was the most protected from the weather for when they travelled through the Suez canal.

Hence the rich became known as POSH because they chose the left side of the ship on the way to India and the right on the way back.

Does that take them out of the sun on a hot day if I've got my bearings right? -- they thought that pale meant Upper class in those days - only work men got tans!
