Hi,

Northern lass has kindly re-posted this thread because I've found out a little more information on James Battys' family and would like to hear if possible some feedback from the forum. I won't go over all the information we already have but here's what I've managed to find out with help:

I found a marriage entry for John Batty & Phebe Hariss 02 MAY 1808 Tipton, Staffordshire which I think is the marriage of Phebe (living with John Parkes 1841 census). On the census returns Phebe's date of birth is abt 1786 which would fit with the above marriage entry and it's possible John Batty died young leaving Phebe alone when she met John Parkes (10 years her junior) never married again but had children.

The three Batty children living with Phebe on the 1841 census I'm thinking these are her 3 Grandchildren from different children born with John Batty.

I found a baptisim entry for:

William & Olive
Phebe Batty 19 APR 1835 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester, England

Interestingly I found another baptisim entry for:
William & Eliza
William Batty 02 DEC 1838 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester, England

It's possible this is the same William who married Olive and Olive died young leaving William to re-marry Eliza. William may have left Phebe with his mother while he was widowed re-married but Phebe remained with her Grandmother.

Mary Ann Batty born abt 1841 seems to have been born out of wedlock because we've already found her marriage certificate which states her mother was Elizabeth Westwood. I'm thinking Elizabeth may have had relations with a son of Phebe resulting in the birth of Mary and this could also explain why Hannah married John Westwood maybe a relation of Elizabeth.

I did somemore searching and found this:

William batty born Rowley Regis 1811 but no parents listed on the IGI (Dam it)
John & Phebe Battey
Thos Battey Bap' 02 JUN 1816 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester, England

I think the bap of Thomas to John & Phebe gives evidence that more children were born to John & Phebe given they married in 1808 and John must have been alive in 1816.

I did find a few suitable matches for a Phebe Harris born abt 1786 in Rowley Regis.

Josh & Elizabeth (parents)
Phebe 27 JUN 1784 Rowley Regis, Stafford, England

Thos & Hannah (parents)
Phebe 25 DEC 1781 Halesowen, Worcester, England

The only other interesting information I found which may have been related to John Battey who married Phebe were:

John & Ann Maria (parents)
EMILY ROSALINNA BATTE - Christening: 20 NOV 1818 Bilston, Stafford, England

James & Eleanore/Ellen (parents)
ELLEN BATTE - Christening: 26 SEP 1819 Bilston, Stafford, England
WILLIAM BATTY - Christening: 12 APR 1812 Bilston, Stafford, England
SARAH BATTY - Christening: 01 APR 1810 Bilston, Stafford, England
THOMAS BATTY - Christening: 21 AUG 1808 Bilston, Stafford, England
JAMES BATTY - Christening: 04 SEP 1814 Bilston, Stafford, England

I'm thinking could these have been relatives of our John given the place and dates.

I think James's mother Hannah full name was Roseannah because this is the name she gives on the 1861, 1871, 1881, & 1891 census returns and one of James's daughters was named Roseannah (my x2 Great Grandmother). This is odd because on the 1891 census Rosehannah states her place of birth County Unknown, Crick/Crich but on the other census returns it states Rowley Regis so what's that all about ?

Any ideas on where I go from here

Kind regards
Adrian

Maybe it wasn't Rosehannah who gace the info to the enumerator and either she wasn't in to ask or the enumerator couldn't be bothered to wait and accepted the "Don't know" as the final answer from the person who was giving him the info.

Hi,

I agree Maths girl because all the other census returns indicate Rowley Regis, Staffordshire.

I've found no link puds69 but to be honest I'm all at sea with the Parkes & Batty family in particular and when I think I'm getting somewhere a spanner gets thrown into the works.

I think for the sake of my sanity I'm going leave the Parkes and Battys for a while to concentrate on other research

Take care
Adrian
