Odd order but that would give Thomas - husband, May - wife and Flora as their daughter, I'll check for other Whitehead/Miles children.

It may be that the index is wrong with Dorothy having a Mills for her mother, it might be a misprint of Miles, is there a look up for Dorothy's birth other than what we have?

I've had communication with the Farningham and Eynesford Local History Society who have supplied the following information about the huts near Eynesford School.

Dear Simon, Thomas Whitehead was born in Charlton, London, not far from Woolwich where his children were born. You can forget Cherry Orchard which just happens to have been the previous property listed. The huts behind the National School in Church Road were owned by John Wood of The Mount in Crockenhill. I note that the census was taken in April so can't really explain why the huts were occupied at that time, too early for fruit picking I would have thought. There was a scandal later that because of homelessness some huts were occupied permanently, but they were only made of corrugated iron and a couple of metres long and wide. I do have slides taken from photos belonging to the Wood family of the huts. As Thomas Wilson, who filled in the schedule, was headmaster of the Baptist school (The National was C of E) he would have known the villagers well. The inhabitants of the huts were itinerants or temporary migrants from London and so difficult to schedule, the fact that he had full details of the Whitehead family would seem to mean that they were better known to him. The Whitehead surname goes back to at least the 1580s in this area. Both brothers Reuben and Thomas Whitehead are listed among the dead on the !st World War memorial in the village church. Reuben was in the Coldstream Guards and died of enteric fever in France, where he is buried. His mother was living in Lashes Cottages in Crockenhill. Thomas W Whitehead joined the Royal West Kent regiment and then transferred to Queen's Royal West Surrey regiment, he was killed in action and is remembered on the Arras memorial. HIs wife was living with his mother at 66 Lashes Cottages, Crockenhill, and was 30 years old with 4 children. His father Thomas had died 4 years before his death in 1917. His obituary said that 2 other brothers were still fighting, so I suppose Fred and John. Hope this helps, Susan Pittman
