I think the fact that the Bible was central to the no-conformists faith meant that most regarded them as legitimate Christians, despite the "law" saying otherwise.

I'd agree there, and welsh non conformists have a repuation of being very true to their faith. I suspect some of them (or most of them) would not have wanted to be married in a church of england church. Not all villages had a Cof E church, but they' have had a chapel. Where I grew up, there were only a handful of houses until the 70's, but there were two chapels!
