So to sum up
Have we got a John Laing who married Agnes Laws

Their oldest two children seem to be
James who married Elizabeth and named their second daughter Agnes Laws Laing
Thomas who married Martha who named their eldest daughter Agnes and later had James Michael Laws Laing

You may find this page interesting and useful as you go further back in your research -- it is a work in progress but they already have a lot of Laings from Sunderland -including lots of cemetery records
http://www.durhamrecordsonline.com/index.php
The search is free but you need to buy credits to see the transcripts but I find the price reasonable compared with some other sites

Ok, so far we have:
- James Michael Laws Laing(Born:1913) (my dad's dad) married Elizabeth Ann Boddy (Born: ca. Dec 1911) (any hits on her fathers name?). Mothers name could be Sarah Ann Painter (not 100% sure).
- Thomas Laws Laing (his dad) (Born:1884), married Martha Annie Scales (Born: ca. Sept 1872) (any hits on her mother/father?)
- John Laing (his dad) (Born:1860), married Agnes Laws. Also have her fathers name Thomas Laws!

Great works guys. Not bad at all, to say dad only slightly knew his father. We're back into 1860 now. Wonderful stuff! :)

EDIT. Just thought that I'd mention part of a weird dream that I had last night. My wife and I were walking down a street and on the left side was a country home/castle type of building and for some reason we went inside. One of the rooms was filled with coats of arms and names wrote upon them (all tiles were a mixture of red & black). The floor and walls were covered in these coats of arms. At the far side of the room was an archway opening and at the right had side of it, on the wall, was a coat of arms with the names John Laing & Agnes Laws. We stepped closer to inspect the tile and as we did so 3 coins shot out of it and spun across the floor. On inspecting these 3 coins 2 were 2x 2 euro coins (slightly bent) and a 1 euro coin. That's all that I can remember. Weird, lol.

To be certain that the facts that seem to hang together are correct you will need to get some birth certificates to show parentage (unless you are lucky and can find more baptisms) and marriage certificates which will hopefully give leads on fathers and their occupations.

Hi Maths girl,

thanks for the info. Before going down the buying ordering/buying birth certificates, of course that's what I'll do when the time comes. Is there any sites, where I can maybe trace the baptism info (parents names etc) for free or must they also be paid for? Looks like the Laing family are centered in Sunderland. Do they have free searchable baptism records available?
