The inscription does not seem to relate to a 1st wife.

Where is Mary Jane buried?
any notes on the entry?
what does it say on census does it say wife?
do you have death certif where did the date of death come from?

It could be that he promised to be buried with his first wife, and his second wife agreed to it.

That is exactly what happened with Wolvies parents
father is buried with first wife

this is on the grave of first wife someone is buried with
"Of your charity pray for the repose of the soul of (1st wifes name)
The dearly loved wife of (Name of husband) who died Date aged XX years
Also of (name) the beloved husband of (name of 2nd wife) who died (Date) aged XX years RIP
I would expect something like the above with word wife on stone
unless they were related and never married

My uncle died in the 1970s his widow remarried, when she died in 1990s, she was buried with first husband.

My thoughts entirely: I think Mary Jane was a relative and the
enumerator assumed they were married..Will leave this for now..
might send for a cert. sometime...

or....they were living as man and wife and were rellies
and that is why they couldn't marry?
I may get that certif for Lilian and frederick as I want to be able
to connect up the tree if we can
shame we can't look it up
