Given how he appears to be reasonably prosperous at least at the end of his life I would think that there must be a newspaper reference that might include his wife's maiden name!

CAn anyone tell me what is the distinction between a widow and a relict?

I think they both mean basically the same i.e. a woman whose husband has died. Relict can only be used relative to the deceased husband though. So, for example, in a burial register then Mary Smith, relict could be next of kin to her husband (who was being buried), but if she was burying her son then she would be listed as Mary Smith, widow. I think. Could be wrong
