" If you don't eat all your dinner it'll be prunes for you"
Don't know how they imagined that I'd have room for prunes if I was already full up!
I wont eat prunes to this day!

If you don't wash behind your ears you will grow potatoes!
Stop it or you'll go blind! (Can I still do it till I need glasses?)
Don't run with scissors or you'll poke your eye out! (I have a good friend who actually did that, but he fell down the stairs and wasn't running).
The Fox smell his own scent first. (This was a useless attempt to stop finger pointing when somebody "passed wind".)
Superstitions are huge with my Mum. i.e.
Don't put shoes on the table.
Don't buy or give Crysanthenums.
Salt over the shoullder if you spill some etc etc.

Re: Does your Mother know................best!
"Don't put new shoes on the table" this stems from when someone in the family died. They would be laid to rest if possible wearing new shoes, in their coffin - open, for all to pay respects, on the table. This would probably be the largest table and flat surface in the house.
"Salt over the shoulder" - as far as I know you threw this over your left shoulder to blind the Devil coming up behind you.
"Crysanthenums" - you never gave these because they were used as funeral flowers. I used to work in a hospital and another flower I now associate with death is lilies. Our sister always made use cut out the stamens because they stained the ward whites. And people who were in long enough to get the flowers, which were cheap big and showey - often died. I even hate the smell. Funny innit.

Your keyboard has a set of characters that are held within it. One of them is the trademark symbol. These days when joining forums or websites virtually every name has been taken. If ou want to keep the same name no matter where you are on the net you can add symbols after it. If the website supports character functions in its username software. If you have a number keypad on your computer, or a numlock button, press it. Now press and hold down the Alt key. And whilst doing that type 0153. Then release the Alt button. You should see the â"žÂ¢ symbol. Just remember to depress the numlock button or youll be typing giberish. Oh and if you access the net via a phone, when you clear your history it will clear the username fields. So email yourself the TM on the end of your username and keep that safe. If you need to re enter it, you can copy it from the email and paste in the username field. Other numbers produce different symbols like registered trademark and the at symbol.

Re: Does your Mother know................best!
Other superstitions -
Robin flown in the house - means death in a year fro a loved one or family member. I have had this happen to me twice and twice someone died within two months. Totally unexpectedly as well.
Never knock down a swallows nest its bad luck. Our neighbour did this and she had a kitchen fire the same week.
Magpies - One for sorrow, two for joy, ALTERNATE three for a girl/three for a letter, four for a boy/four for something better. Magpies were feared, some say because they represented death. But to the ancients they were revered because they were so strikingly black and white they represented both worlds, death and life. So they were an animal that could pass between worlds and therefore had great power.
Never cut down an elder tree by direct act or indirectly else a fire in your house you will see - The elder was again very important to our ancestors, both for drink, and for fruit and wood. Which is hard but also hollow and could be used for many things. She was also the Elder tree and homed the oldest spirits. To cut one down meant that your house was at risk of fire until it had regrown or you had replaced it. A lot of tree workers will under no circumstances touch an elder tree. Others do not care one bit.
Cut an apple in half and put it under your pillow on Halloween. And your lover you will see. This stems from the fact that the apple was always representative of love. And it was a major tree in witchcraft. Cut an apple in half across the core and you will see a five pointed star. A clear sign of witchcraft. The seeds are very easy to grow - so this tree had vast importance to our ancestors.
Tell the bees all you know. From when we as a race kept bees almost like we grow flowers. They provided an important energy source which could be stored. The wax was used as was the honey. But until recent times the hive would be destroyed to harvest the honey. You told the bees everything. They were messengers in times of old and would carry your message, hopes and dreams to the otherworld. If you forgot to tell your bees the goings on in the house, especially pregnancy, they would up and leave.
Holly wreaths on the door at Christmas. Holly was one of the ancient trees. As was the Oak. The Oak ruled for half the year and then there would be a great battle with the Holly King. He would then win and would rule for the rest of the year. The Holly held extra wonder for the ancients because it could not die and was more virile than the Oak. The oak would loose his leaves in the Winter and through the forest scape, you could clearly see the Holly still full in leaf. This happened at Winter. So this meant that despite the DARK driving life from the forest the Holly was immune to its power. Garlands and sprigs of berried holly would be harvested and hung over every opening into the house and especially the fire place, the hearth and heart of the home. More berries the better. This would prevent evil from entering the house during the winter months. Unless invited over the threshold. Mistletoe had white berries and was sacred to all, the Holly had red berries. They were both easy to see in the Winter. The red represented blood and fertility of the female and the white - well you can guess what a man produces that is white. The two mixed in a household was to have nature herself guarding your farm and home or whatever, from the very forces of darkness. Which is why I find it totally hilarious when I see a church with one on the doors. Brilliant lol. If only they knew.
For superstitions you can find no better source than the secrets of trees and nature.
