A family story goes 'When the daughters started putting on airs father would say "Don't you go getting all hoity-toity, don't forget my money was made from lavatory pans!"'. Pottery dealer seems a rather genteel way of putting lavatory salesman doesn't it?

I couldn't find one either, nor an 1851 census entry, which is why, given the gossip in the family about an Irish connection, I wondered if she had come from Ireland, hence the (missing) arrival entry I found somewhere but now can't replicate (might it have been on the LDS site?). However, I didn't think that passengers from Ireland would have been registered as the whole of Ireland was part of the UK in those days.

Thanks Jimmy that's interesting stuff, especially that Kate (known as Kind Kate in the family) seems to have been that much better off at her death. Sorry if they are silly questions but:

Do the effects include the house? If not I suppose they might have been renting.

What does "Indexed as William" mean? Is it that it was indexed as William Barralet or that it was as Minnie William or something else altogether?

Is it possible to look up the two addresses (Oakfield Road & Sefton Road) to see if Barralets or married daughters were living there in 1911?

These are still South London addresses though, no sign of a move to the wilds of Edgeware.

Incidentally there's a site here that has a historical value conversion widget.

Not sure about what effects mean, on Ancestry it was indexed as William no mention of Minnie.

Yes indeed, that's MrsSRD's grandfather. The term Submarine engineer is a little misleading as, although submarines were being commercially produced in Britain by then, EE actually worked on the underwater cables used to send telegraph messages across the world. There are a couple of interesting then and now maps here.

That's brilliant Jimmy! Obviously the Barralet penchant for nicknames strikes again as Laura must have been known as Molly. Still no sign of Mr Macquellan though.
I've tried to track down the solicitors, they seem to have moved to City Wall where they picked up another partner, then to Hitchin in Hertfordshire, but the phone numbers I've found on the net all come up with 'number unobtainable'.
