Jo :)

One marriage pre war and one after -- different places and with a surname like Walbeoff she could well hav reverted back to maiden name if it seemed to foreign to some -- not that Steckham sounds that English!

Or if she divorced, she may have reverted to her maiden name.
I agree that Steckham sounds as though it's been anglocised, probably not surprising in the London area.

It does look as though it might be complicated and I think we should slow down and let Alan get his breath :-)

Alan, you can search here

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

it doesn't have all of the marriages on but you should find one for Jessie on there, also your birth (I think) and Jessie's daughter's birth.
You need to see if the marriages that have been posted on here look likely to be relevant.

There is another site http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ which you could search for your father's birth, based on his age when he died, or his actual birth date if you have it. His birth certificate would give you lots of information and I think you can buy it via that site.

Welcome to your new hobby!

Name: James Blue.
Spouse Surname: Steckham Or Walbyoff.
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1953.
Registration district: Ealing.
Registration county (inferred): Middlesex.
Volume Number: 5e.
Page Number: 272.

I think what Alan needs is the marriage cert for this marriage to see if James's fathers name is on it.

So this is where money and patience come in -- you need to decide whether the marriage has a high likelihood of being the one that you want and then send for it and wait in excited expectation until it drops through your door and then you will either jump high and cheer or feel very deflated and head back to try again!

Good luck

That is the perfect description of what it's like, sometimes its the right bit of paper, and sometimes it's not. And even when it's the right certificate it doesn't always contain the info you need to go further back!
