Rob, don't put Australia Day amongst the commercialised and lighthearted celebrations.

It is an important day to Australians and the only people who make money out of it are the flag sellers.

I would quite happily get rid of the Queen's Birthday public holiday in Australia.

Its not even held anywhere near H.R.H's birthday anyway!

Most people in the UK don't have that one! If you work for the civil service or health service or similar you have (or did when I worked in the british health service) an extra "bank holiday". Some places gave it in connection with one of the other bank holidays, some gave you the choice as to when you took it. The British don't have a constition day or a bank holiday for any of the patron saints!

Actually, some of the British have bank hols for Patron Saints - they do in Scotland and Northern Ireland (not sure about Wales). A government site says

"Businesses and schools are not necessarily closed on Scottish bank holidays, and the Scottish banks follow the English and Welsh bank holidays for business reasons."

Which makes me wonder why they have a Bank Holiday if the Banks aren't closed because they follow English bank holidays for business reasons. Is it a Bank Holiday if the banks are not on holiday?

But there is an unwrittain constitution, even though it isn't law! Otherwise we couldn't have a constitutional monarchy (and GB claims to have the oldest constitutional monarchy!).
Wales doesn't have a bank holiday on St Davids Day (1st March), either officially or otherwise.

Perhaps they could call it "An optional public holiday".

How is it in Denmark? Here we don't get these alternative days, so if Christmas day falls on a weekend it is just tough luck. We get 1st May and the National day on June 17th (as long as long as they are not a weekend day), and First day of Summer which is always a Thursday which is pretty stupid as it doesn't even make for a long weekend. Ascension Day is naturally always a Thursday so no long weekend there either. And this year First Day of Summer coincides with Maundy Thursday which is a holiday anyhow, so we lose that one

It's the same here as far as them falling on a weekend!
Other than that we get New Years Day, Maunday thursday, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Accension Day, Whit monday(which is always held on the correct monday, not like in Britain where it's been changed to spring bank holiday), Great Praying Day (direct translation, a day which amalgamated all the different saints days into one, always on a friday). 1st May and Constitution Day are two half days, but this year both fall on a sunday, so we lose them.

I'm lucky as far as my employment goes, cos we get Christmas Eve too, and we get extra free days if Christmas falls on a weekend - but that's not normal. I really miss tha August Bank holiday, as we have nothing between june and christmas.

All in all it's okay, cos we get a couple more than the UK, so with the one's we lose due to being a weekend, it evens things out!

I think the original "Bank Holiday" name was literally that when the law brought in days when the banks should close and everybody have a holiday because business could not be done --- that was long before the internet meant you could do all your shopping etc at anytime fo the day or night!!!

Bank Holiday's were introduced as part of improvement working conditions -- before that the only day that most people could have off was Christmas Day -- Remember Scrooge and Bob Cratchett !?

My dad refused to acknowledge Father's Day, claiming it was a commercial American import. I'm inclined to say that about Proms. Thank goodness we never had them when I was at school!

I do not acknowledge Fathers Day Mothers Day or Valentine Day.
My parents know or knew i loved and appreciated them as does my wife(i think). I refuse to pay exhorbitant prices for flowers to line the pockets of fat capitalistic pigs!!Nice one Rob!!

My friends daughter had problems having hers Christmas eve last year!

I used to get 10 bank holidays when I worked for the NHS. Extra one in May and August I think it was, long time since I worked mind

She decided on a dress and we got it today! Seems odd saying it now after all this
Far too much too pay really we dont have it but she said she will pay half
So this is the dress but not that colour, its in fushia
