A death certificate is something I've never seen, perhaps I've been fortunate that I haven't needed to see one.

Thank you for the information, I should hope it'll state a relationship/something like that. :)

They're quite often just the icing on the cake, although sometimes they have extra info on that is useful. For example on widow's death certs it can say that she's the widow of ...(never seen it on widower's certificates). Or the name and relationship of the informant is useful. It can also have the occupation of the deceased.

All this info should be treated with caution, as it's only ever as good as the informant - but it can be useful.
I have one certificate I'll never know for sure whether it's the correct one, but my opinion is that the informant is the deceased's daughter in law. When asked for the name of the husband she gave her own husband's name instead of her now dead father in law's name, the occupation matches up, and they did have a son with the correct name. And I've looked for absolutely ages for another certificate and there doesn't seem to be one.

Thank you..

My problem is that I don't even have any idea where he was born either.

I just wish my father-in-law was alive to answer some of these questions.

Found this on 1911

Married: 8 years 3 Children 3 Living
Caroline Alma May Hazell - Dau - 7 - School - Newport, Mon

This is the only William Davidson I can find on the 1911 census who was a Sailor, all the other William (H) Davidson were in the Military.

1911 - Royal Navy at Sea and in ports abroad
William Davidson - 22 - Single - Able Seaman - St Ferguss, Banf - Presbyterian

Sorry - scrap the above William - I should have been looking for WALLACE.... doh!

I've found a Wallace DAVIDSON on 1911 who was in the Scots Regiment. (I think) Just curious as to how he made the transition if this is the right one. :)

Ok, so I've had a new development since yesterday.

Caroline Alma May HAZELL and Wallace Henry DAVIDSON were not married.

I have found another birth registered in Jul-Aug-Sep 1939 for a Roy HAZELL in Chepstow, Monmouthshire. So I'm going to apply for that birth certificate too.. you don't know if you don't get do you?
I have no idea what this would mean really should this also be the right person. I've also found a transcription on another website of a girl June Davidson HAZELL being buried in Chepstow Municipal Cemetery (where Wallace Henry was buried).
Another indication that maybe the children were originally registered as Hazell.

Apparently Wallace Henry was married prior to having seemingly illegitimate children with Caroline. This did not end well according to my MIL. It never would have ended well really, would it?

Wallace was not a sailor either, he was a Tailor. Could this be a transcription error on the birth certificate? Or maybe the registrar misheard the occupation? What do you think? He owned a tailor shop with Caroline in Chepstow at some point.

I've also received the death cert for Wallace.

I think 1a Mounton Road was Chepstow Union Workhouse.

It looks as though he worked there, but I don't think it was a workhouse, and by 1954 if it had once been a workhouse it wouldn't have been any longer! I googled it and came up with this:

Yep, I've found a little more info on it since I posted the last message.

In the 1930's the Workhouse became Regent House Public Assistance Institution. Mount Pleasant hospital was also along Mounton Road (I think).

I'm going to have to talk to somebody local.. (I'm relatively new to the area.)

Thanks for the link though. :)

I'm hoping so.. I have found an old PDF document from Gwent Family History Society saying that the chepstow branch visit the library every month so I'm hoping this is still the case and I'll take a trip there... :)

I'm so intrigued.
