A co-incidence maybe but this William Smart born Langtoft is in Castle Bytham in 1851 There are loads of names listed, looks like a Lodgings or a Workhouse, will have a good look at the image:-

LOL Jimmy, they were all Furnace Men in Cradley Heath Yes you have a point, but I am sure that one you found in 1881 is not him. Think I found him in Lincs in 1851. Linell.

now I can send for one of those births but on the bapt he is a Roberts and 22nd May 1852

HI NL yes would think he would be Roberts. He is definitely son of Selina. I found that Langtoft is just outside Market Deeping and Castle Bytham is about 6 miles further west, with Boune about 8 miles further north, all in spitting distance of each other. Will do some more digging and get back to you. Linell.

Ok now I have an update to this

Gardener hope you are looking in on this one......

Now myself and Lin have kicked this one around for about 3 yrs
I am now of the mind that my William Rose is a William Smart
which means all my links to the Tibbetts Roses etc are out of the window!

Just to recap
William Rose b abt 1852/3 "son" of Samuel Rose b 1828
-no birth certif at all and it has been bottomed that one.....yet other kids of Samuel and Mary Ann Rose have birth certif
-no bapt yet Spencer Rose and Harriet Rose are bapt at Graingers lane
-not on 1861 census....but on 1871 (not on 1881) and then on 1891 and 1901 (not looked for 1911 )

BUT next door to Samuel Rose and wife Mary Ann is a family of Smarts from Lincs

I think this is my William Rose taken in by the Rose family.

I found a bapt and this is the info from Archives
"I have checked the baptism entry for William Roberts and the following is unfortunately the only information recorded in the register.
22 May 1853 baptism of William son of Selina Roberts of Langtoft, singlewoman."

so it appears that William Smart born 1853 was bapt as above

BUT

Today I recd the birth certif
12th April 1853- Langtoft- William - boy- Father William Smart- mother Mary Smart formerly Roberts- occup of father Agricultural labourer- X of Mary Roberts

also the other birth entries just didnt fit

Smart William Bourn 7a 285-----------"The March 1853 entry has the wrong parents altogether."


Births Jun 1853 Smart William Bourn 7a 29-------------" have also checked the 1861 census and the entry we have for June 1853 seems to fit best with the census information even though the mother is not Selena".............info from lincs regis office
