Thanks again - you guys are obviously pretty good detectives.
John was born to her in April 1893, out of wedlock. No paternal details on the birth cert., her maiden name is said to be 'schent' and she is said to be a 'housekeeper'. There is an address 'Back Queen Street' (no number) Dalton. It no longer exists. After she was widowed she must have embarked on an ill-fated relationship. I believe her intention was to find another provider for the family, but it didn't work, and she was left in a pretty desparate situation and relying on the goodwill of others.
Thanks Peter, I'll see if electoral registers exist for 1892, and maybe, I might find John's father - my great grandfather!!
I'd still like to know where she was in 1901/1911 though.
Cheers

Is it possible that Kate remarried? I couldn't find a marriage death or emigration for her so went looking for any Kate b. abt 1860 in Germany, and found this one:

Thanks Dianel and Jimmy for that lead.
I have found a record of a kate POLKINGHORN emigrating to Boston from Liverpool on 05-Oct-1908.
There is no age/DOB listed, she is 'single' and her occupation is 'wife'(!). All that can be gleaned from that is she is likely to be an adult. There was a chap called Cecil POLKINGHORN on the same voyage, but not necessarily with her. I haven't yet found a census record (1881/1901) for him.
Can we assume they were together, or is it coincidence they were on the same voyage?
By 1908 she would have been nearly 50 years old (and having had 7 children) - she would have had to have been very spunky to contemplate that voyage to a potentially hostile place, and start again from scratch.
What do you think?
Best wishes to all for 2010.

Thanks a lot for that, Jimmy.
It looks as though Kate and Cecil were travelling together, and she is the right age to be my relative, but the wrong nationality.
Also I have no knowledge of Cecil as a family member, so I would have to conclude that they belong to a different Polkinghorn line.
Cheers

Have tried to find a birth for Cecil about 1893 (+/- 2yrs) but no matches. Also the 1901 census only lists one Cecil born 1900 in Truro, so that's not him. Also Kate is not listed as a family member.
Anyone find anything different?
The only scenario that would fit is if she had twins in 1893, registered John and absconded with 'Cecil'. It does seem unlikely and anyway she would have to provide proof of identity (for Cecil) to apply for the travel docs. for Boston.
Is it more likely that we are searching an incomplete database?
Would that also be the case for not finding her in 1901/1911 census records?
My own experience of using various search engines is that, although they are very useful tools, they are not infallable.
I can see that it's a big advantage belonging to a forum such as this, where members use different sites and use different search techniques, and unearth more useful information. So thanks everyone for your help.
