I suspect it will always remain a mystery as to whether this is:

1 Joseph son of Charlotte baptised twice
2 Josephs, sons of same Charlotte
2 Josephs, sons of Two different Charlottes

There may be something extra in the notes
on the actual regisiters

I wonder if william Rudge acknowledged the birth
it is surprising the extra info in the PRs that isn't on IGI

I have connected up Charlotte here

http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/tr ... =324491831

just waiting for someone to add the parents for Charlotte

Kaye!!

kdw wrote:As written in parish reg

Not sure what the P stands for unless that is also illegitimate.

Prudence dau of Joseph and Prudence Bennet Bapt ye 4th July 1773

Marriage for Joseph and Prudence
Joseph X Bennet otp Bach and Prudence X Fletcher otp Spin by P W (Vicar)
Wit: Esther Tayler and Joseph Chandler
3 Dec 1759 St Johns Halesowen

I was once told they put P if it was private for some reason - often if they feared the child would die imminently - if they then lived they sometimes then had them baptised again!

In this case it could have been private due to the nature of the illegitimacy to avoid further embarassment

According to the notes in the Parish Register the 'P' stands for Parchment, entry written on Parchment.

Linell.

Would that match up with "Private" if it meant written on "Parchment" ie paper away from the book and then transferred to the book when the priest/vicar got back to the church?
