marriage

Greenfield Martha Louth 7a 1232
you can order the cert online from lincoln registrar
you got the names and qrt so it sould be easy for them to find it
http://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/section. ... 7433&ovt=1
Can you tell me what the difference is in ordering a certificate from Lincoln or GRO London?

And just to point out that when you order from the local Registry office you can usually specify stipulations
ie I only want it if the father is such and such
and
quite a few registry offices will do a sweep couple of years either side of a year which can be very useful.
It is always worth sending them an email asking them what they offer and most that I have dealt with
will let you know if they have it for you.
The Gro is good but you have to give them a GRO index and can't specify "I only want it if father is...."
So I think there is more flexibility if you are uncertain of certain facts with a local office
and with the GRO if you order the cert and you put the fathers name and it isnt correct they will still charge you think is is
£4 for admin so I think when ordering thru GRO you have to know for certain the names involved.
If you know the church you may find that your local archives will send you a photocopy of a marriage for much less than
the cost of £7
It is exactly the same info from the GRO or local regis office in someways better as it will be the original entry.
Some Local offices will photocopy the actual entry, some will type or write it out.

Thank very much for your reply you have given some very good advice. I have only ordered a Marriage Certificate for John William and Nellie Johnson as that is where things have got stuck I will however use local offices as they seem to be very helpful from that you say.

Hi,
Sorry I thought I has mentioned this. John William Fletcher and Nellie Johnson married 1905 and lived in Scartho (1911 census) they are my grandparents. This is the brick wall and I have sent for the Marriage Certificate. The other leads I thought I had have become disconnected.

Yes this the marriage. I need to see who the parents where. For a time it did look like Thomas and Martha were. But I have doubs based on the following.
1. No one in the family including myself has ever heared f an Uncle Marshall, Arthur or John. These were property owners and this goes back.
2. If I try to go back further more links become less likley.
The only answer to this is comfirmation.
1911 Census
John William Fletcher Head 45 Horseman on Farm Parish of Waltham
Nellie Fletcher Wife 26 Grimsby
Nellie Margaret Fletcher Daugt 4 Parish of Waltham
Alice Fletcher Daugt 1 Parish of Waltham
Signed: Nellie Fletcher
7 Penfold Lane, Scartho
George William, and Robert Andrew came a bit later.
Nellie Johnson is another brick wall that I have not persued to deeply yet. A family member who is now in her 80s remember hearing and an Uncle Andrew believed to be the brother of Nellie.
Nellie's father according to family talk came from Sweden arriving in Grimsby on a 'butter boat'. My cousins have no more knowledge than that. Those living are on the Hallett side.
BTW does anyone know what a 'butter boat' is should something colloquial to Grimsby. Nothing in Google like it.

Sequence of events could possibly be:
1841 - Thomas is unmarried and his widowed mother, Mary, is living with him.
1851 census - Thomas is still unmarried and his widowed mother, Mary, is living with him. Also he has a servant, Martha Greenfield.
1851/52 - Thomas marries? Hannah? and has son, Thomas
Not a lot of time between the 1851 census and Thomas' christening (07 Jun 1851) for this marriage to occur. Possible shotgun wedding or illegitimate birth?
1858 - Thomas & Hannah? have daughter, Eliza A
1858 - Hannah dies (possibly in childbirth)
1859 - Thomas marries his current or former servant, Martha Greenfield
There are these marriages in Free BMDs:
Thomas Brownlow 1850 Louth Lincolnshire
Hannah Clay 1850 Louth Lincolnshire
Joseph Coe 1850 Louth Lincolnshire
Thomas Fletcher 1850 Louth Lincolnshire
Mary Hubbard 1850 Louth Lincolnshire
Betsey Kirk 1850 Louth Lincolnshire
George William Vessey 1850 Louth Lincolnshire
Sarah Waterman 1850 Louth Lincolnshire
but why wouldn't this Hannah be on the 1851 census?

Hi
I just came in from shopping and found your postings. Great stuff. It looks as it I were right all along. Just give me some time to work all this out. Put it this way for 2 John William Fletcher to be born abot the same year in a small village in 19th Century Lincolnshire would be remote. My tree is on line at Ancestry user haqq42 but it will take me a little while to update and check.
I think I must not have read the census well enough. Stay tuned I have some questions to follow. Such as what happened to Marshall H and Arthur they are a mystery.
