I'm mainly using FreeBMD to search, and obviously there are a few missing records as it's all being transcribed by volunteers.

Sorry to double post, however this is relevant to my original question.
I have been able to verify that Walter Johnston is the man in question, and as such the vital information is that he was born circa 1895 in Salford/Oldham. Would I be best contacting the Manchester lodge for information if he was a member?

I can't imagine getting a reply soon, considering the time of year it is, but I've sent them an email asking whether they have records etc. I'll let you know how I get on.
