Where is this Slater family in 1851? has JAmes married Jane? and had Joseph? who later comes back to visit his friend who used to live next door?
Does that help or confuse?

Thats wot I want to know cos I think this is the right direction
where are they in 1851
I think Jane is dau to James there is a bapt that fits
JANE SLATER
Christening: 15 JUL 1821 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester,
Parents:
Father: JAMES SLATER Family
Mother: LYDIA
Extracted
I wonder if Jane is the mother she has Joseph slater by a Joseph Oliver
and then for some reason in 1861 that Joseph Slater b 1842 is living with former neighbours
a Sarah Hipkiss formally married to a Joseph Hipkiss
Then there is that marriage for a Joseph Olvier and a Sarah Hipkiss
could that be the dau of joseph Hipkiss and Sarah the ones on the 1841
Jane dies and Joseph Oliver marries dau of Sarah and neighbour of Jane
he maybe dies and so stepson of Sarah is with his step g. ma
1841 CensusKnowle, Rowley Regis,
Joseph Hopkiss, 40, Nail Maker
Sarah, 35
John, 15
Sarah, 12,Marryanne, 8
Elizabeth, 5,
Eliza, 3
/Thomas, 1
Emealia Smith, 15, Nail Maker

There is no birth for a Joseph Oliver in 1845 or before
but there is this one
Births Dec 1846
Slater Joseph Dudley 18 283
which fits with that death for a Jane Oliver in Dec 1846
I think that they werent married
which is why he is a Slater
but father an Oliver
the bapt is a way of legitimising it
then Jane dies
he marries Janes neighbour later
and son ends up with neighbours mother as a boarder

NL you have beaten me to it .
After much scribbling on paper I have come to the same conclusion as you.- but then I looked again haven't you got him being baptised before he is born?

Hmmmm yes there is that but it could be the first one bapt and then he dies
or
could be mistake in the transcript and should say 1846?
or
mistake in the indexes and should say 1845
or
entered late as a birth registered....so bapt Dec and then Oct nov Dec regis
or
I am talking a load of rubbish
I don't know ( not about talking the load of rubbish cos I do do that....but I digress!)
I think there is something there
I am happy to look up that Joseph Olvier marriage
and I will send off for birth certifs or death ones if we think it helps us cos this one we have to sort!
What do we all think
and what do we need?

This sounds okay to me, if he was born in OCT/NOV/DEC, QTR. he could have been born between OCT 1st, and DEC 14th.

That was my maths too. - you can't baptise before they are conceived can you?

I thought they were the same year.
Could that baptism be for one of these 2.
Births Mar 1843.
Slater Joseph, W. Bromwich. 18. 568.
West Midlands Birth 1843.
SLATER Joseph, Wednesbury, Sandwell Register Office, WED/6/247.
Births Sep 1845.
Slater Joseph, West Bromwich. 18. 556.
West Midlands Birth 1845.
SLATER Joseph, West Bromwich South West, Sandwell Register Office, WBSW/9/401.

The 1845 one looks most likely - but would need the birth certificate to check mother's maiden name wouldn't we?
