This is interesting
the name pains Paynes
PAYNE, SYLVIA WOODALL
GRO Reference: 1845 S Quarter in DUDLEY UNION Volume 18 Page 259
I am curious now as to why this name was given to Noah he marries as that.
and it will be interesting to see how all the children are named
and any bapts.
There is something more to it if the kids are regis as that.

Won't let me quote this as post is locked
Quote from previous post
" Smethwick Archives said this was a habit from Christ Church Oldbury.
The Vicar handed the paperwork over a 3rd party to fill in the details for registration.
If they could not read the marraige register they subsitituted "Pain" for the surname.
They were going to get the Bishop of Lichfield to provide the church register so they could correct all the "Pain" marriages.
To be honest I'm not sure that is what has happened here. The 1851 census could be a simple transcription error where Davis has been read and then re-written as Pains ie the D has been read as P, and vi as in - that is all it takes. But that would not explain the birth of Thomas Payne in 1836, or the marriage in 1835 for Woodall and Paine.
It does look as though Noah used both names and then settled on Davis "

thanks after Noah I have births and marriage certifs for the children as Pain Pains Penn Payne etc, but all going on to use Davis Davies.
Noah was registered 1813 as davis and his brother Thomas 1815 who went on to Rochdale retaining Davis then a brother William Pain followed and used that mame mostly spreading up to warrington Manchester etc
my conclusion was his Mother Mary remarried a Pain hence he married as Pain, She must have died circa 1851, and everyone reverted to Davis again.
example
About Pain Davis, William Henry
PAINE, WILLIAM HENRY Mother PETERS
at Kates Hill
GRO Reference: 1841 M Quarter in DUDLEY UNION Volume 18 Page 262
1841 Freebodies Dudley
William Davis 20 Puddler
Gheeny 20 ( Jane )
Elizabeth 20 freebodies
William 5 mnths PAINE, WILLIAM HENRY
Mary 70 Poss Wm Mother Mary was born about 1781 in Rowley Regis, Staffordshire,
And living next door to The parents of Eliza Woodall Wife of Noah Davis
James Woodall age 65 b 1773, St Johns Road Dudley in
It`s a SAGA and an ongoing puzzle
But one day eureka you never know
