I am getting really muddled with Henry, How many times did he marry if at all? Found 1 marriage to Mary Ann Monk.
But then how many children did he have ?

I don't think it was unusual for children to go into the workhouse or an orphanage if their mother died, it meant the father could carry on working, especially if his work required anti-social hours or working away from home, and, despite the images conjured up by Dickens, most workhouses were considerably better than living as paupers outside the system. Ok they were strict by modern standards but for children not that different to boarding school, they got fed, clothed and had medical services. Yes they had to work as they got older, but then they would have had to do that home. Even comparatively recently such things weren't unusual - just after WW1 my wife's mother and her siblings were sent to a private Quaker orphanage when their mother died, their father couldn't work as a cabbie and look after them and anyway had no knowledge of how to look after the children.
