The birth town of Manchester is consistent through the census records.
But I’m not 100% convinced John Clark was actually from Manchester.
Could his father William had been a boatman and on his travels?

It’s also messy because Richard Clarke, who married Emily Ellen Hotchkiss; both their mothers were sisters; Mary Ann Trumpeter and Ellen Trumpeter respectfully.

using that church in manchester and parents see if it throws up any sibs for John.

Have found this but the only mention of "boatman" is the 1861 census where John says that is his occupation, apart from that he is a Labourer.

What on earth was they doing there, and how would they have got to this destination?

I searched for baptisms in Manchester but nothing concrete, but are available in Tipton.

Is there any records regarding people travelling on canal boats at this time?

There is a book on the Tipton Slasher the most famous Boatman they used to have fight each other over the locks
