Awesome :) Thanks to all who did some digging.

I just want to sum up and see if I have things in my head straight. (Not least of which because I have to keep stopping to look places up on a map :))

Folks seem to have found 4 Basterfields in Halesowen born in the 1819 - 1831 bracket:
James (b 1819) m Emma Franklin
Henry (b 1820) m Sarah Shivlock
Benjamin (b 1824) m Elizabeth Cocksey
Joseph (b 1831) m Matilda Jackson

I just poked the 1841 census, and found some possible matches to James, Benjamin and Joseph. Sadly, none of them in the same house :) but Joseph and James appear to be quite close physically if I am reading this rightly.

I am wondering if this is the Joseph who married Matilda Jackson...

BASTERFIELD, William M 29 1812 Shropshire
BASTERFIELD, Sarah F 39 1802 Shropshire
BASTERFIELD, Joseph M 10 1831 Shropshire
BASTERFIELD, Emma F 6 1835 Shropshire

Registration District: Stourbridge Sub District: Halesowen
Civil Parish: Halesowen Address:
Spring Hill Back Row, Halesowen, Hasbury County: Shropshire

James:

BASTERFIELD, James M 20 1821 Shropshire
BASTERFIELD, Mary F 20 1821 Shropshire

Registration District: Stourbridge Sub District: Halesowen
Civil Parish: Halesowen Address:
Spring Hill Back Row, Halesowen, Hasbury County: Shropshire

Benjmin:

BASTERFIELD, Joseph M 50 1791 Shropshire
BASTERFIELD, Mary F 50 1791 Shropshire
BASTERFIELD, Benjmin M 20 1821 Shropshire
BASTERFIELD, Eliza F 10 1831 Shropshire
BASTERFIELD, Elizabeth F 5 1836 Shropshire

Registration District: Stourbridge Sub District: Halesowen

Civil Parish: Halesowen Municipal Borough: Halesowen
Address: Islington, Halesowen County: Shropshire

Lots of data, now to try and pick some information out of it....

According to FreeBMD there's a William Basterfield marriage in 1870 in West Bromich which seems to be a bit short of people on that page - wondering if the transcriptions might not have got that far:
Marriages Jun 1870
Basterfield William W.Bromwich 6b 839
DUNN Lucy W. Bromwich 6b 839

I also found in the 1841 census:
Name Relation Condition Sex Age Birth Year Occupation Disability Where Born Original census image

HARRIS, Charles Head Married M 54 1807 Labourer Glamorgan Swansea
HARRIS, Maria Wife Married F 39 1822 Pembroke...
HARRIS, Thomas Son Unmarried M 13 1848 Labourer Glamorgan Swansea
HARRIS, Maria Daughter F 7 1854 Labourers Daughter Glamorgan Swansea
HARRIS, Kitty Daughter F 5 1856 Labourers Daughter Glamorgan Swansea
HARRIS, Hannah Daughter F 4 1857 Labourers Daughter Glamorgan Swansea

If Edward Basterfield & Hannah Harris were siblings of William and Catherine, that might be the right Harris family/ Kitty is certainly about the right age for my Catherine Harris and born in the right place (Swansea), and ditto with the Hannah m Edward from 1881 census

EDIT haha! I just found Catherine Harris's death index entry in the Victorian BDM search, and it says her parents were Charles Harris and Maria Unknown :)

(The dates I have atm suggest that Catherine was about 15 at most when she got married....)

Could all have been brothers, their children names are often Henry, James, Edward. Back of Spring Hill and Islington were only a field apart, probably 500 yards. Halesowen was in Shropshire until 1844, then back to Worcestershire. There were Basterfields in Halesowen when I lived there circa 1951 - 1971. Will have a look at the Parish Register see if that holds any clues. Linell.

Have had a look at the Halesowen Parish Transcript. Did notice how the name Basterfield has many variations.

19.4.1818 James Bap son of John and Phoebe Baskerfield Borough Mason.
13.8.1820 Henry Bap son of Joseph and Mary Bastable Borough Mason. Born 14.2.1820.
25.12.1821 Benjamin Bap son of Joseph and Rebecca Basterball Borough Mason.

The reference to 'Mason' must surely mean they are of one family.

This Marriage was interesting:- Elijah Baskerfield fa bach Mason Borough. Father Joseph Baskerfield Mason, and Maria Jones fa Widow Borough, Father John Careless Labourer. 3.12.1837. Witnesses were Henry Hinchley and Mary Robinson.

HTH from Linell.

Judging only on the 1841 census results, James and Joseph might be, but I think Benjamin is an outlier - he seems to be living in a different household. But they might have been cousins if they are not that far apart.

25.12.1821 Benjamin Bap son of Joseph and Rebecca Basterball Borough Mason.

According to these Baptisms, their fathers were all Masons, Masons were few and far between in Halesowen circa 1820, they must be Cousins. I would work on the theory that their fathers were brothers. Will see what else I can find in the PR's later, best wishes from Linell.
