I was wondering with the surname Moody if there was any connection to the printing and publishing company Mark & Moody of Stourbridge so I've done a google search. It appears that the 2 "brothers" of your Henry weren't in fact brothers.

This link states that Charles Harry Moody was the youngest son of CHARLES MOODY.

This link gives further info on Charles Harry Moody, and also Arthur Hatfield Moody (his father was GEORGE MOODY, the Moody of Mark & Moody)

More info on Arthur Hatfield Moody

This doesn't solve the mystery of when your Henry Moody was born, but it does give that Charles Harry Moody & Arthur Hatfield Moody weren't brothers.

Edit:
Sorry, just re-read your original post and you say that you have already researched these 2 Moody men.

The people my grandfather identified as family members clearly exist but I can’t find any connection, and how would he (or his father) have had access to all this info to make up?! (I can see how he would have known about the two Moodys with Stourbridge connections who were supposedly his brothers, but how would he have known about Charles and Selena Durrant?) To make things more complicated, in the 1911 census Henry is listed for the first time as having been born in Ross, Herefordshire, but I haven’t had luck tracking his birth there either.

For what its worth, it looks to me as though your grandfather had some research done (or did it himself) and the dots were connected to make a pretty pattern. You seem to have done everything right yourself though.

The Ross entry in 1911 is very odd. I can't see why that would suddenly pop up unless he believed it to be true. There was a Moody family there at the right time and the kids seem to have landed in the workhouse after their mother died, but I don't see any reason for a younger child to be deposited in a totally different workhouse.

There is another Moody in the Stourbridge one though, viewtopic.php?f=31&t=16401&hilit=john+moody but again there is no connection to yours.

So frustrating!

Thanks again everyone! My head has been spinning with all the possibilities.
Jimmy, thanks for searching for Henry's baptism/birth. I was hoping it was just hidden away somewhere. :( And thanks for finding that other Harry Moody--I hadn't found him before. I've been digging into his family but no connections yet.
Northern Lass, thanks for adding my Henry Moody to BCC. Yes, please add my username in the notes just in case someone has any info. I believe Henry Moody b 1866 died in 1942 in Stourbridge (following his wife Sarah who died in 1935). The Ross birthplace is really a mystery...but since Henry was the one who signed the 1911 census form, I'm leaning towards it being true. Do death certificates list place of birth?
Gardener, I think you're right that someone must have researched this and pieced a pretty story together! It has sent me on all kinds of wild goose chases. My grandfather moved to Kenya when he was 20 and spent almost all the rest of his life there & in South Africa, so either he did it before he left or his father or sisters did it and passed the stories on to my grandfather.
I really appreciate all your help in sorting through this. I wish there had been more info in the workhouse records, because that seemed like the best source for a possible answer--oh well.
Thanks,
Joanna

I too think he was born Ross herefordshire....if he filled in the 1911 census he would have put where he came from.

was there a possible birth regis for that area for a henry moody?
if so might be worth sending for
