Remember the time well (I was 8 at the time) most people and streets were anticipating the 'end' for
a few days and had started putting out flags & bunting. I had damaged my fingers that day putting out
a flag from my bedroom window....The 'sash' window was broken and slammed down onto my hands...and
I went to school that afternoon with hands bandaged. The teacher was examining my hands at the front of
the class when another teacher burst into the classroom,saying the 'The War was over' and Churchill was making
a speech...Both teachers rushed out to hear the speech and I told the rest of the class that 'War was over'....
It seemed like a completely new era as most of young kids only new a time of war and we thought that the street
parties would go on for ever!!!!!!!! We had a large bonfire in the middle of the street outside our house, the fire
was that fierce that it burnt and blistered all the paint from windows and doors of adjacent houses.....
I'll never forget the jubilation that followed in the days & weeks after.
